How Much Space Does a Reformer with Tower Need

Plan on roughly 250cm x 70cm of floor and 160cm to 220cm+ of ceiling height, depending on the tower. That's less room than most people expect. Pilates Direct is Australian owned and operated, and we'll check the fit with you before you buy.

Start with the reformer's floor footprint

The baseline floor space

Reformer beds typically run around 240cm in length, so measure a clear rectangle of at least that size before looking at anything else. The Pioneer Pilates PP-07 measures 235cm long x 64cm wide when unfolded, which gives you a realistic starting point for a foldable pilates reformer.

What the tower adds

A tower adds height and bulk, but no extra floor space. Your floor measurement stays the same whether you choose a reformer with tower or not. What changes is the overhead room you need, which we break down by tower type in the next section.

Room to move around it

Allow roughly 100cm of clearance on each side so you can step on and off and move your arms and legs freely. Springs and the footbar also need to be reachable. Measure the open space around the machine, not just the machine itself.

Start with how you'll actually use it, then pick the reformer that fits your space. Mark the footprint and side clearance on the floor with tape first.

In a commercial studio, the same logic applies per machine. Side-by-side reformers each need their own clearance, and instructors need room to walk between them. Whatever the setting, proper form and qualified instruction matter, so leave enough space for safe, supervised movement.

Ceiling height by tower type

Ceiling height depends on the tower you choose, so here is how the main options compare before you measure your room.

  • Full trapeze: about 250cm x 70cm of floor space and a minimum ceiling height of 220cm, so hanging exercises can be done from the trapeze bar.
  • Half trapeze: similar floor space to a standard studio reformer, with the tower reaching 160cm to 180cm. Hanging exercises aren't performed on it, so the 220cm rule doesn't apply.
  • Standalone Cadillac: roughly 240cm x 80cm of floor space with 220cm or more of overhead clearance.
  • Wall-mounted tower: suits rooms with limited floor space but enough ceiling height, and works as an alternative where a full trapeze won't fit.

Tight on space? Plan for storage and delivery

A foldable reformer is an easy way to plan for a tight room. The PP-07 folds down to 122cm x 64cm x 50cm, so it can be stored upright between sessions instead of taking up floor space all week.

Check the leg height setting too. The PP-07's legs adjust the carriage from 26cm to 36cm, which changes your vertical clearance, especially under a tower.

Before delivery, measure doorways, hallways and stairs along the route. For a studio, allow extra clearance above and on both sides of each machine so instructors can move freely, and confirm exact dimensions before you order.
