The Wunda Chair, designed by Joseph Pilates

"Pilates step chair" is the everyday name for the Wunda Chair, an apparatus designed by Joseph Pilates. It began as a piece of furniture that doubled as exercise equipment, and it has since evolved into the combo chair, with padded split pedals and adjustable handles. We stock them for studio and home use, so you can add a full-body challenge without giving up much floor space.

How it's built

Every Pilates chair has three core parts. A padded seat platform gives you a stable base to sit, kneel, stand or lie prone. Springs beneath it create the resistance, and you can adjust the tension to suit beginners through to advanced users.

The pedal mechanism then lets you push and control dynamic movements. On our Motion Pilates Wunda Chair, a wooden locking bar joins or separates the pedals.

Why the compact design suits small spaces

The small footprint was part of the original idea, and it still works well in a spare room, a corner of a living area or a busy studio floor. It is lightweight and easy to move, which makes it practical for home owners, instructors and studios alike.

Whatever your level, proper form and qualified instruction matter on any piece of Pilates equipment, so we always suggest learning the movements with a trained instructor.

What you can train on a Wunda Chair

You can work seated, kneeling, standing or prone, and the adjustable spring tension means the same chair suits a first session and an advanced one. Here is what it covers:

  • Core strength: pedal and seat movements keep your centre working throughout.
  • Balance: standing and kneeling work challenges stability one leg at a time on split pedals.
  • Upper body conditioning: push and pull patterns using the pedals and handles.
  • Lower body work: controlled leg exercises against adjustable spring resistance.
  • Postural alignment: exercises that build awareness of how you hold yourself.
  • Multiple positions: the Motion Pilates Wunda Chair supports sitting, kneeling, standing or lying prone.

Our Wunda Chair range

Our range covers three models from two trusted brands, Pioneer Pilates and Motion Pilates, so you can match the chair to your space and the way you train.

The Pioneer Pilates Deluxe Wunda Chair has a split pedal combo, removable handles and a hand-sanded beechwood body, with upholstery over EVA foam padding.

How do you choose the right Pilates chair?

The right Pilates step chair suits your experience level, fits your space and is built to last. Check the spring resistance, footprint, construction and pedals, then match them to how you plan to train.

Check the build and the features

Beginners should look for adjustable spring resistance, so the chair can grow with you. Sturdy construction matters too, so check the weight capacity rating and test that the pedals move smoothly.

  • Split pedals, for training one leg at a time
  • Removable or adjustable handles, such as the Motion model's 115cm to 145cm range
  • Non-slip padding on the seat

Measure your space

A standard chair takes up about 60cm wide x 40cm deep x 60cm high, so a small corner of a room is usually enough. Measure before you buy, and allow room to move around it.

Start with how you'll actually use it, then pick the chair that fits your space and your budget.

Pilates chair questions we hear most

Is a Pilates step chair suitable for beginners?

Yes. The spring resistance on a Wunda Chair is adjustable, so you can start light and add load as your technique develops. Proper form matters on any apparatus, so we recommend learning the basics with a qualified Pilates instructor.

What is the difference between a Wunda Chair and a Wonder Chair?

A Wunda Chair has split pedals, so you can work one leg at a time, and it follows traditional Pilates principles. A Wonder Chair is a modern take with a single pedal mechanism and extra features, which suits beginners who want simpler movement patterns.

Can I use a Pilates chair after an injury?

Physiotherapists do use the Pilates chair for lower body work, but we can't make medical claims or advise on your recovery. If you're returning from an injury, please get clearance from your physiotherapist or doctor before you start.

Will a Pilates chair fit in a small home?

Most likely. It's lightweight, easy to move and only about 60cm wide. Our team can confirm dimensions for any model in our Wunda Chair range.

Can I try one before I buy?

Yes. Our Sydney showroom lets you try a chair in person, and our Australian owned and operated team can help you compare models for home or studio use.
